Local Health Services

For those  who need to take extra care of one's health, it will be reassuring to know that we have extremely good health care locally. Our local doctors have a excellent reputation with visitors, and our local hospital authority was recently given high grades in the national tables. Our local Mountain Rescue Teams are some of the best trained and equipped in the country and now we have a first responder scheme and a new pharmacy  in Grasmere; there are also two chemists in Ambleside.

Ambleside Health Centre:    Tel: 015394 32693  The Ambleside Health Centre is next to St Martin's College, (part of Lancaster University) as you enter the town of Ambleside on your left if you are coming from Grasmere.  The doctors are very nice and well used to holiday visitors calling in when required.  You can ring Ambleside Health Centre and make an appointment to see the doctors in Grasmere if it is more convenient at the Grasmere Surgery.

Grasmere Pharmacy, 1 Oak Bank, Broadgate, Grasmere, (Tel: 015394 35553).  This is to be found in the village about 200 metres beyond the park between "The Oak Bank Hotel" and "Sara's Cafe".  The owners are exceedingly helpful and are open 9am to 5.30pm from Monday to Friday and also 9am to 4.30pm on Saturdays.  On Monday evenings they will remain open until the doctors' surgery has finished.

They deal with NHS and private prescriptions dispensing and can deal with repeat prescriptions.  It usually takes 2 days to obtain a repeat prescription if you don't have your repeat prescription notes with you.  They can however try their best to help in emergencies.

They also have hosiery, ostomy and incontinence supplies in addition to the usual cameras, cosmetics, toiletries, vitamins and supplements, first aid items, baby care and gifts.  In addition passport photos can be done while you wait.
